Saft launches its latest developments in rechargeable and
primary lithium battery technology
MP 176065 HD Integration rechargeable Li-ion cell offers high specific power LS 14500 primary lithium cell now offers best in class capacity of 2.6 Ah
Munich, November 7, 2008 – Saft, world specialist in the design and manufacture of high-
tech batteries for industry, is presenting two new developments in lithium battery technology
for electronics applications at Electronica 2008. They are: the MP 176065 HD Integration – a
new very high drain version of the MP Integration series rechargeable Li-ion (lithium-ion)
cells - and the LS 14500 primary lithium cell - now upgraded to offer a best in class capacity
of 2.6 Ah.
MP 17605 HD Integration™ for very high drain applications
Saft has extended its existing MP (Medium Prismatic) Integration™ series of Li-ion cells and
created a new cell capable of delivering the high specific power and long cycle life demanded
by very high drain applications, such as rack-mount telecom backup power, AEDs
(automated external defibrillators), small UPS and electric actuators. The result is the MP
176065 HD Integration™ cell, with a specific power of 1000 W/kg, that can provide a
maximum continuous discharge current of 45 A and pulses up to 65 A.
Exceptional cycle life
The new MP 176065 HD cell offers an exceptional cycle life of well over 1500
charge/discharge cycles when operating at up to 100 W.
Designed for easy integration into battery systems
In common with all MP Integration series cells, the new MP 176065 HD Integration is
designed for ease of integration within the vast array of rechargeable battery packs required
by modern military and professional applications. The cell’s compact shape, special terminals
and safety features facilitate either parallel or series connection. However, in many cases the
high nominal capacity (3.6 Ah) provided by individual cells will eliminate the need to connect
two or more cells in parallel to achieve the desired capacity. This reduction in cell-to-cell
wiring will help reduce pack assembly costs and increase reliability.
The new MP 176065 HD cell is easy to transport worldwide (non Class 9). It is manufactured
at Saft’s dedicated Li-ion cell facility in Poitiers, France.
LS 14500 offers best in class capacity
The nominal capacity of Saft’s LS 14500 lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) cylindrical AA–
size cells has now increased to a best in class 2.6 Ah. The life of a primary cell is directly
linked to its capacity. So this increase from the LS 14500’s previous 2.45 Ah capacity offers a
useful six per cent extra battery life that puts Saft’s cell well ahead of the opposition in
applications where longevity is essential.
The increased capacity for the LS 14500 cell results from Saft’s programme of continuous
improvement. The cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6 V, provides a continuous current of 70
mA, with pulses up to 280 mA, and can operate over a wide temperature range from -60°C to
+85°C.
Low self-discharge rate
An important feature of the LS 14500 is its low self-discharge rate - less than one per cent
after one year of storage at +20°C.
Applications
Saft LS 14500 primary lithium cells are ideally suited for a wide variety of professional
electronic applications including: utility metering; automatic meter reading; alarms and
security devices; tollgate systems; memory back-up; tracking systems; automotive
electronics; professional electronics.
