Council?
A: Participation in the election of the College Council is an important opportunity available
to members of the College. As professionals, registered early childhood educators (RECEs) will take part in the self-regulation of the profession of early childhood education. You may participate either as a candidate for election to Council or as a member who will cast a vote for a candidate. Q: How do I know if I am eligible to stand for election to the College Council?
A: A member of the College is eligible to stand for election as a member of Council if, on
the date of nomination, the Member meets the following requirements: A. Holds a Certificate of Registration in the College of Early Childhood Educators. B. Is nominated in the electoral district in which he/she practises the profession. If the member is not practising the profession or is not practising the profession in Ontario, he or she must reside in the electoral district for which he/she is nominated. C. Is not in default in the payment of any College fees. D. Has not had a finding of professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity E. against him/her in the three years preceding the date of nomination. F. Is not the subject of any disciplinary or incapacity proceeding. G. Holds a Certificate of Registration that has not been revoked or suspended in the six years before the date of nomination as a result of a professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity proceeding. H. Holds a Certificate of Registration that is not subject to a term, condition or limitation arising from a professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity matter. I. Is not an employee of the College and has not been an employee of the College in the 12 months prior to the date of nomination. J. Is not an employee, director or other member of the board of directors, governing council or other governing body, or officer, of any of the following: i) the Association of Early Childhood Educators Ontario, the Association francophone à l’éducation des services à l’enfance de l’Ontario or other professional association involving early childhood educators; or ii) the Association of Day Care Operators of Ontario, Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care or other organization that has, as its mandate or a significant portion of its activities, advocacy about matters relevant to child care or early learning; and K. Is not an employee or member of the executive of any collective bargaining unit The positions listed in sections (I) i) and ii) above do not include a director, officer or other member of the executive, of a local branch of any of the organizations described in sections (I) i) and ii). Please be advised that the underlying policy with respect to the requirements listed in (I) and (J) above is based on the difference in the mandate and role of a professional association, an advocacy organization relevant to child care or early learning and a collective bargaining unit representing early childhood educators to that of the College of Early Childhood Educators whose mandate is to serve and protect the public interest. The purpose of these requirements is to avoid a member of Council having, or being perceived to have, a conflict of interest. Q: How do I find out what electoral district I can stand in?
A: Please see Question 1 for a list of electoral districts. This list contains a description of the
geographic areas within each electoral district.  In the case of a member who is practising the profession in Ontario, the member's electoral district is the electoral district in which the member principally practises.  In the case of a member who is not practising the profession or who practises the profession outside Ontario, the member's electoral district is the electoral district in which the member principally resides. Q: Can I be a candidate if I am a College member but I am not currently working in the
early learning and care sector?
A: Yes. However, you must live in the electoral district for which you are nominated and
Q: How does the nomination process work?
A: In order to stand for election, a person must be a current member of the College and
meet the requirements listed in the answer to the question “How do I know if I am eligible to stand for election to the College Council?” To nominate someone to stand for election, a person must be a current member of the College. A current member of the College is a member who is not in default of payment of the membership fee and if the member's Certificate of Registration is not suspended. Who is eligible to nominate a candidate? The nominator's electoral district must be the same as the candidate's electoral district.
In the case of a member who is practising the profession in Ontario, the member's
electoral district is the electoral district in which the member principally practises. In the case of a member who is not practising the profession or who practises the
profession outside Ontario, the member's electoral district is the electoral district in which the member principally resides. Q: What is the time commitment for Council members?
A: Council members commit approximately eight to 12 days per year for attendance at
Q: If I am elected to Council do I require a leave of absence from my employer?
A:
It is not expected that a leave of absence is required. You may want to speak to your
employer for permission to attend Council and committee meetings at the College for approximately eight to 12 days per year. Q: Are elected Council members paid an honorarium?
A: Yes, there is an honorarium paid per day and reimbursement of all reasonable and
related travel, accommodation and meal expenses. Q: When will the elected Council members assume their responsibilities?
A: The Council members elected on April 29, 2014 will assume their responsibilities at the
first regular meeting of the Col ege’s Council after the election, which is tentatively scheduled for June 2014. Q: Will I automatically be sent information about voting?
A:
Yes. If you are a member of the College in good standing as of February 28, 2014, you
will be sent information on how to vote in late March 2014. Members eligible to vote, and who have provided the College with a valid e-mail address, will be sent a notice by e-mail of how to vote online. A voting package will be mailed directly to members eligible to vote who have not provided the College with a valid e-mail address.
Q: Can I choose to vote in either my business or my home district?

A: No. If you are practising as an early childhood educator in Ontario, your electoral district
is determined by where you are practising the profession (the location of the place of employment) at least 60 days prior to the election. If you are not practising the profession or are not practising the profession in Ontario, your electoral district is determined by where you live at least 60 days prior to the election.
