MD Thesis: Haematological changes in subarachnoid
haemorrhage.
My primary medical qualification (MB BS) was gained at the University of London. In addition, I have a Bachelor of Science Honours degree (BSc Hons) in anatomy and human anthropology. A medical doctorate (MD) investigating the effect of haemostatic changes on intracerebral haemorrhage and brain trauma. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and gained the specialty qualification in surgical neurology (FRCS SN). I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon at The National Hospital for Neurology (NHNN) and Neurosurgery and Institute of Neurology (ION) in London UK. Additionally, Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children with practicing privileges at The Wellington Hospital and The Princess Grace Hospital. I have the largest adult epilepsy surgical practice in the UK. I lead the surgical arm of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy which is the renowned, preeminent epilepsy research group in Europe. I perform all surgical therapies for the management of epilepsy such as temporal lobe resections, hemispherotomy, corpus callosotomy, vagal nerve stimulation and gamma knife surgery. In addition, we have a telemetry unit for video EEG and Intracranial depth electrode recording. I have a number of ongoing research interests examining the technique of EEG-FMRI, the evaluation of functional deficit following epilepsy surgery resection and imaging of the optic radiation to prevent visual field defects in temporal lobe surgery. My specialist neurooncology service has a particular interest in the prediction and preservation of function during large resective neurosurgical procedures and the reorganisation of brain function around brain tumours . This multidisciplinary approach integrates facilities such as 3T MRI, FMRI for language and motor function, DTI, MEG, neurophysiology and neuropsychology. As a result of this expertise, I perform the largest number of ‘awake’ craniotomies presently in the UK. This enables the largest possible resection of brain tumours while minimalising neurological deficit. The availability this year of an interventional BrainSuite MRI facility will enhance this ability. This ‘first’ for the UK will maintain our position at the leading edge in this field. Gamma Knife and Cyberknife ensure that our patients have access to the most extensive treatment options available at any centre throughout the world. My busy general neurosurgical practice encompasses spinal surgery, trigeminal neuralgia, hydrocephalus, head injury and peripheral nerve surgery. My research and academic qualifications are detailed elsewhere in this document. I have several studies submitted for Ethical and Research and Development review. I have published and presented widely both nationally and internationally and hold a number of research grants funding ongoing projects at The Institute of Neurology in London.
